Editor's Note:
This article was amended on Oct. 26, 2010 to inform readers that Sand Rock
has been eliminated from playoff contention.
Collinsville
is the Class 1A Region 7 champion and the Panthers will entertain Region 8
fourth-seed Shoals Christian when the Alabama High School Athletic
Association's annual high school football playoffs begin on Friday, Nov. 5.
Cedar Bluff, the runner up in Region 7, will
host No. 3 seed Hackleburg, whose two losses came from R.A. Hubbard (20-14)
and Addison (35-21). As the third seed from Region 7, Gaylesville will
travel to meet Addison. The Bulldogs’ only
loss was to R.A. Hubbard (12-6).
Gaston, as the Region 7 number four team, also hits the trail and will run
straight into the fifth-ranked Raging Chiefs of R.A. Hubbard. Their only
blemish was to 4A powerhouse North Jackson.
In
Class 2A Region 6, coach Russell Jacoway's Sand Rock Wildcats have been
mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.
Tie-breaking procedures similar to those used to eliminate Sand Rock may be completely exhausted in Class 3A Region 5,
where the fourth seed will travel to Piedmont
for a crack at the 2009 3A state champions. The teams waiting to see if
their season is extended by an extra week are Vinemont, Hanceville and Winston County.
In
the Class 4A, Cherokee County will hook up with the fifth-ranked
Deshler Tigers. In 2009, the Warriors defeated Deshler 37-20 at Bobby Joe
Johnson Field in Centre. Cherokee County
went on from there to edge Jackson
31-27 in the 4A state title game.
The
sixth-ranked Fort Payne Wildcats should roll into the playoffs as the only
undefeated team in the 5A classification. The Region 7 champions welcome the
fourth seed from Region 8, the Jackson-Olin Jaguars.
In Class 6A, Gadsden City
used an overtime win over Hewitt-Trussville to capture the Region 7
championship. With that win, the Titans will host Region 8’s number-four
seed, the Huntsville Panthers.
