JSU drops in poll after loss; Bates among those to be honored

By KURT DURYEA

JACKSONVILLE — Snake-bitten by their loss to the UT-Chattanooga on Saturday, Jacksonville State slipped in both Football Championship Subdivision Top 25 polls released Monday. UT-Chattanooga scored first, but JSU rallied quickly to take a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Gamecocks would only score three points the remainder of the game and the Moccasins claimed a 38-17 victory.

The Mocs used the win to jump up to No. 14 in the Sports Network/Fathead.com poll and No. 17 in the FCS Coaches Top 25. The loss dropped JSU to No. 16 in the FCS Coaches Poll and No. 17 in the Sports Network/Fathead.com poll.

The Gamecocks started the year at No. 9 in both polls. Following their 24-23 come-from-behind win over UT-Martin in week one, the Gamecocks had dropped one spot to No. 10.

JSU will return to the friendly confines of Burgess-Snow Field Saturday where they will face Georgia State and former Tide head coach Bill Curry.

The Gamecocks will also celebrate Hall of Fame festivities that will include Lisa Baswell Bates of Sand Rock, a two-time conference Player of the Year and Academic All-American of the Year in women's basketball; Walter Broughton, who set JSU's single-season touchdown record; Marilyn Hanssler, a three-time All-American and National Champion gymnast; and Ron Money, one of the all-time scoring leaders in Gamecock basketball history. All three will be recognized during half-time of Saturday's football game.

Bates, the head basketball and volleyball coach at Sand Rock played two years at JSU. During the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 seasons, she set a school record in free-throw percentage by knocking down 123 out of 144 attempts for a stellar .854 shooting percentage. In total Bates recorded 1,187 career points. In addition, her name is still inscribed in the JSU record book with the most games (28) for a player scoring in double digits. Bates’s on-court leadership and ability secured two-time conference Player of the Year recognition for the Locust Fork graduate.

Saturday's game against Georgia State will be televised by CSS beginning at 2:30 p.m.
