AHSAA releases new prep football classifications By KURT DURYEA
The
reclassification of schools in the Alabama High School Athletic
Association for the 2012 and 2013 football seasons was released
Wednesday by Executive Director Steve Savarese.
The reclassification alignment was approved by the Central Board of Control
at its fall meeting. The process is implemented every two years to consider
the changing enrollments of schools, school consolidations and closings, new
schools and association members and current member schools adding sports to
their interscholastic program.

Perennial 1A power Sweet Water, winner of nine Class 1A state championships,
will test the competition in Class 2A next year as they climb the
classification ladder.
Sand Rock gets a change, as they go from Region 6 to Region 7 in Class 2A.
Joining the Wildcats will be familiar foes Fyffe, Ider,
Bulldog coach Steve Smith likes the look of the new regions.
“I think they are about as fair as you could be,” Smith said. “One nice
thing is that our travels issues should not be large concerns.
Plus, we’ve got some great region matchups.”
Two significant moves occurred in Class 3A, as traditionally dominant
Deshler drops from 4A. Handley also was moved up to Class 4A. It will be a
historic first meeting when they tangle with new Clay County Central (
While most other area schools received a makeover, Class 4A Alignments are made for each sport in each class, based on the number of schools participating in a sport. The reclassification alignment for football is listed below.
Writer’s note: Within minutes of the Central Board’s approval of the plan
for reclassification, it was pointed out that Pope John Paul II Catholic
High School of Huntsville had been inadvertently omitted from the
reclassification list.
Once committee members entered Pope John Paul II into their proper spot, a
domino effect begin that resulted in several adjustments in classes 4A and
